Having gained her degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy with Dublin Business School, Ruth went on to concentrate her studies in the area of Trauma, studying with world renowned trauma experts Babette Rothschild in London UK and Bessel van der Kolk in Boston MA. Ruth is currently studying the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Recovery method developed by Dr. Peter Levine.
Somatic Experiencing is a holistic approach to psychotherapy that incorporates a mind body connection to healing.
Life threatening events such as war, severe accidents and sexual violence can lead to trauma related issues such as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). However, ANY event that is perceived as life threatening can lead to the development of PTSD symptoms, which severely impact on our day to day ability to enjoy life. This includes events such as child abuse, neglect and bullying which can be interpreted as life threatening when experienced at a young age. As the body is the battle ground of trauma, Somatic Therapy focuses on renegotiating the relationship between the body and the mind, so that healing may occur.
Ruth also works extensively with addiction but rather than concentrate on the addiction Ruth believes in treating the pain and trauma that led to the addiction.
