Approach

My practice is grounded in a humanistic and integrative approach and I will creatively draw on different modalities and types of therapy best suited for the issues you would like to focus on in therapy. These approaches include Person-Centred therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural therapy, Psychodynamic, Gestalt and Existentialism amongst others. I will work with you to identify your personal strengths and abilities, and focus on how you can use these to move forward to create a fuller and more authentic life.  The emphasis throughout the work is always placed on your individual needs and your personal goals for your time in therapy.

As a counsellor and psychotherapist it is my job to hold a safe and supportive space for you which facilitates deep inner reflection and exploration with the view to make lasting change. This process takes time and patience but one that is worthwhile.

Finding the right psychotherapist for you is key for therapy to be beneficial to you, and we can take the time to allow our relationship to develop and see whether it is a good ‘fit’ for you.

It is my belief that the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client is one of the most important aspects of therapy and that the therapeutic relationship can act as a conduit for understanding, acceptance and transformative growth.

Experience & Areas of Interest

I have had a longstanding passion and interest in social justice and mental health. Since my arrival in Ireland I have been an activist, campaigner, journalist and broadcaster. My interest in mental health began when I experienced mental health difficulties in 2006 and reached out for support. I experienced first-hand how the services in Ireland lacked awareness in the importance of creating an inclusive therapeutic space.

As a response to the lack of service I founded Insight Matters in 2011 with Anne Marie, with the view to provide inclusive, accessible and affordable mental health support.

In addition to working in media and mental health, I have also worked in Human Resources and to date still enjoy being a D & I workplace trainer and public speaker.

In 2014 I was honoured with the Frederick Douglas Award as part of the Lord Mayor’s Awards for my outstanding contribution to Dublin civic life.

In 2015 along with 9 other inspiring women I was given the Irish Tatler Woman of the Year Award for my work as a Marriage Equality campaigner.

From 2007 to 2017 I presented the award winning weekly radio programme called Global Village on Newstalk 106-108FM, every Saturday evening from 7-9pm which regularly discussed issues related to social justice, mental health and personal well-being.
